This exclusive collection brings together 12 of Nico Muhly?s sacred works for mixed-voice choir. These vivacious fresh and dramatic pieces will make an impact whether in the church or in the concert hall and range from the intimate Lord keep us modest when we claim to the effervescent Bright Star Carol alongside service music such as Muhly?s Third Service. All are accessible to learn and offer choirs a new slant on contemporary choral music at its very best. 'Choral music has always been at the emotional core of my musical output. Even when I?m writing large-scale orchestral works (or indeed chamber music) I alwaysfind myself returning to techniques and textures I?ve greedily stolen from centuries of music from Tye to Howells early and recent. I try to design my own choral music primarily for use in worship where the measure of the success of the piece is if it helps guide the listeners? ears upwards and elsewhere as sacred architecture and the various rituals of the church themselves are meant to do. The specificity of music heard only in certain seasons is for me an important and thrilling element of the choral tradition: a Beethoven Symphony is welcome at any point in the year but an anthem for Candlemas works only then at a certain time of day and on a certain day of the year. With this functional spirit at the heart of the compositional process I hope that the music collected here makes equal sense in a concert setting. These works range from ordinaries of the mass to hymns to motets and represent a decade and a half of output.' - Nico Muhly

Nico Muhly's A Long Line for solo Violin and Electronics. 'A Long Line for solo Violin and Electronics was written for violinist Erik Carlson and was originally meant for performance as part of VisionIntoArt's 2003 show Democrazy. The piece is built around a series of chords played by Electric Organ and articulated by Bass Clarinet and Bass Drum. These chords gradually shorten over the length of the piece as the Violin sings a long line over the texture. Towards the end of the piece the Violin is instructed to play a pattern of fast notes 'like a string exercise but extremely expressively.' - NicoMuhly Download the pre-recorded element HERE . Duet No.1: Chorale Pointing Downwards is a work by contemporary composer Nico Muhly for Viola and Cello. The piece received its premiere at the Tenri Cultural Institute in New York in February 2004. Muhly himself writes of the work that it's the first in a series of short string pieces that serve simultaneous purposes as harmonic and technical studies for both composer and performers. Duet No.1 is constructed around a cycle of fourteen chords repeated almost without cessation. This drone-like cycle is subject to a few rhythmic alterations as well as two interruptions keeping thingsdynamic and exciting. The middle of the piece becomes in Muhly's words 'a sort of fervent perpetual-motion perseverance' in an attempt to combine harmonic beauty with what sounds like a musical exercise.

Nico Muhly's Step Team for 9 players. Full score.'Stepping is a form of almost militaristic dancing involving the entire body as well as the voice. The routines are highly choreographed and precise but maintain an expressive freedom that comes out of the energy required to pull off the moves. In writing this piece for the Chicago Symphony MusicNOW I wanted to avoid too much delicate pointillistic writing and instead focused on making the nine players function as one team with a singular rhythmic agenda. Whenever the Chicago Symphony comes to New York I am always impressed with the massive steakhouse-style proportions of the brasssound so this score features the Bass Trombone as a guide for the harmonic and lyrical material. At a certain point in the piece the rhythmic unisons begin to break down and individual players or groups of players start slowing down or speeding up against the pulse. The Bass Trombone works as a unifying element here announcing the changes between sections. Some scattered pulses ensue and the brass section continuously shepherds the other instruments back into line. Step Team ends with a duet between the Bass Trombone and the Piano with a series of ornaments from the other players.' - Nico MuhlyInstrumentation: Flute Bassoon Horn in F Tenor Trombone Bass Trombone Piano Violin Viola Cello

Nico Muhly's Patterns is a work in four sections for solo Organ. Patterns was commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for the 2014 Biennial National Convention in Boston Massachusetts U.S.A.'Patterns is composed in four sections each of which is sort of a rhythmic étude. The first (?Move Along?) is a perpetual motion machine with staggered and angular rhythms thrown between the pedals and the left hand. The second movement (?Palindromes?) is calmer and is centered around an idée fixe in the left hand while the right hand interjects and ornaments. The pedals here are a clumsy cousin constantly upturning the sense of rhythmic stability. The third movement (?Similar?) is all to do with ways to divide up the bar: seven eight six five four ? it?s all there. Then the finale (?Very Fast Music?) is a perpetual motion machine on its highest setting ? manic and hyper with hiccoughs offsetting the regularity of some of the rhythms.' - Nico MuhlyStephen Farr in the September/October 2015 issue of Choir & Organ writes that this work is 'full of filigree figuration and no little rhythmic complexity.'

The sheet music for contemporary virtuoso composer Nico Muhly's So Many Things arranged for Mezzo-Soprano and Piano Accompaniment. So Many Things was commissioned by a number of institutions including The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association UC Berkeley and Carnegie Hall. Lasting around 15 minutes Muhly has set three poems to this wonderful music including a lengthy narrative poem by Joyce Carol Oates and two translations of C.F. Cavafy by Daniel Mendelsohn. Muhly has brilliantly managed to take the emotion of the words and replicate them through music creating an astonishingly movingaccompaniment that not only reflects the lyrical sentiment but complements it. He states that the Piano moves between skittish and ostinato relentless but often pausing for an effective break in the musical narrative. With drones and palindromes from the Piano the Voice leaps between intervals creating a dynamism that creates uncertainty rather than resolve much like the poetry.

Nico Muhly's The Sweets Of Evening (2006) was written for Dianne Berkun and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. This work is for children's voices and Piano. Having worked with this group of musicians many times before Muhly was honored to finally write them a piece. Having sung in a boy choir himself Muhly is fascinated and intimate with the changing nature of young voices and looked for a text that is itself transitory – in this instance depicting the movement between dusk and night. A great fan of Christopher Smart’s poetry and particularly of Benjamin Britten’s setting of fragments from Jubilate Agno; Muhly's settingnods to Britten in its episodic nature and generosity towards the singers. The sheet music for Nico Muhly's Doublespeak arranged for Chamber Ensemble and composed for the orchestral sextet 'eighth blackbird'. The piece is arranged for Flute (Soprano Recorder) Clarinet in B flat Percussion (Castanets Tenor Drum Pedal Bass Drum) Glockenspiel Piano Violin and Cello. It works for 2-6 players and this item includes the full score as well as the parts. Doublespeak had its debut at the Edlis Neeson Theatre in Chicago performed by the new musical six-piece 'eighth blackbird'. The piece is a slow and repetitive one punctuated bymoments of stark beauty. It is according to Muhly something of a tribute to the great Philip Glass the forefather of minimalist classical music. It takes implicit inspiration from his entire oeuvre but also explicitly incorporates portions of his most famous and valued works interweaving them inside a new composition that captures what 'eighth blackbird' do best. The Doublespeak sheet music would be ideal for Chamber Ensembles looking to perform or practise minimalist music drawn from the 1960s and 1970s. If you love Philip Glass or Nico Muhly or both this composition is a real treat.

I knew I wanted to write a duet a piece of religious music and something to go along with a bit of Birtwistle. My initial instinct was to base the piece on drones as Birtwistle's music has so very many notes but then I decided that an austere but ecstatic approach was the best to fill a coherent evening. I asked my friend Craig Lucas to paraphrase the Stabat Mater text - which describes the Virgin Mary weeping at the foot of the cross on which her son is crucified. The piece is organised byseparating each phrase of the text with a moment of silence with the exception of the last three which are joined with a frenzied chorale with improvised dynamics from the Harp Wind and Strings. - Nico Muhly Instrumentation: Soprano and Baritone voice Flute Clarinet in Bb Harp Violin Viola and Violoncello.

Nico Muhly's Marrow composed for SATB choir unaccompanied with texts from Psalm 63 vv.1–3 6–8 Book of Common Prayer (1662). Commissioned by the Netherlands Chamber Choir for the project 150 Psalms to be premiered by the Tallis Scholars during Utrecht Early Music Festival September 1st 2017. Duration: c. 3 minutes. 'Last September in one weekend in Utrecht settings were sung of all 150 Psalms by 150 different composers covering 1000 years of choral music. The Tallis Scholars were one of the four choirs taking part and among their contributions was this new piece by Nico Muhly. The words are from the Book ofCommon Prayer version of Psalm 63 with the title teasingly taking one word from ‘My soul shall be satisfied even as it were with marrow and fatness.’ Cries of ‘O God’ provide a fluid background to an almost plainchant-like proclamation of the text at start and finish with other voices gradually joining the psalm text in the central section until all unite on ‘when my mouth praiseth thee with joyful lips’. For a choir happy to subdivide into 4S 2A 2T and 2B it is a setting of imagination and beauty.' - Sunday by Sunday

POD-Nico Muhly's Pulses Cycles Clouds for large mixed Percussion ensemble was written for the 50th anniversary of the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. At its core it is a group of four marimbas surrounded by various bells and other mallet instruments; unpitched instruments here are primarily played by an ensemble of amateur percussionists. The piece obsesses over a cycle of eleven chords introduced slowly through the beginning of the piece. Each chord is announced by a large vertical moment with bells vibraphone and a sudden shift in tonality. The four marimbas then relax into a series of soft interlockingpatterns over which an ensemble of glockenspiels and crotales plays a simple rhythm in a complex relationship to the other instruments. Eventually the pulse disintegrates entirely into a vision of a night sky; insects unexpected interruptions - a walk around a quiet landscape. Eventually the pulse returns but nocturnally subdued. The piece is meant to echo in its way the thrill of community music making the joy of sharing a pulse and the various connections both rhythmic and interpersonal I made at BUTI two decades ago. - Nico Muhly

I feel like I spend half of my life trying to trick string players to play like Fretwork and vocalists to singlike the Hilliard Ensemble so it was with enormous pleasure that I composed this piece. The text isderived from Psalm 39 which Gibbons himself set as well as an account of Gibbons's own autopsy which is a poignant 17th century semi-anonymous text. One of the most thrilling things about the sound of five violas da gamba playing together is the sense of their phrasing being derived from vocal music but made somehow electric and ecstatic through ornamentation and the friction of the strings. The piece has an idée fixe based on a minor scale with two possible resolutions and many ornaments. In between iterations the voices in rhythmic unison intone the psalm. It isn't until the autopsy text arrives that the voices begin to split into more elaborate ?Gibbonsy? verses and responses. A series of semiimprovisedfragments on the text 'Take thy plague away from me' introduces the third section of the piece where plucked strings create a halo around the text 'hear my prayer OLord.' The piece ends with the ornaments wildly exploded over the voices singing two words endlessly repeated.' - Nico Muhly

Johannis Cantabrigiense-Nico Muhly's Third Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis) is a work for SATB Choir and Organ Accompaniment. Commissioned by the Master and Fellows of St John's College Cambridge it was first performed by St John's College Choir on 29th May 2016. A full performance lasts around 7.5 minutes. 'The American composer Nico Muhly has often spoken of his love of the early English church music which he sang as a choirboy and his recent choral works include a Third Service composed for St John's College Cambridge. (Given his love of music by Thomas Weelkes we can perhaps hope for at least six more.) This setting though has nothing to do with the early English repertoire and is in a bold modern idiom more akin to Tippett's famous setting for St. John's. The Organ plays a varied and independent role throughout sometimes with dynamics that are quite different to those in the voice parts. The Organ part is sometimes written on two staves without further comment and it's not entirely clear what is required between pages 3 and 4 where three staves become two. The vocal parts include some modest vocal effects and there are Soprano and Alto solos in the Nunc dmittis. The Gloria of the Nunc is a varied repeat of the Magnificat Gloria together with a subtly reworked conclusion to match the general mood of the movement. - Geoffrey Webber Choir & Organ MagazineÂ

The Two Brothers is an arrangement by Nico Muhly of a story taken from the folk tale and nursery rhyme tradition. A simple yet stirring setting The Two Brothers is arranged for two-part children's Chorus and Piano accompaniment. The Two Brothers tells the story of two young boys whose dangerous play-fighting curiosity ends up in tragedy. The juxtapostion of the bright and beautiful voices at the beginning of the piece with the tragic ending and lyrics leaves a stark and lasting impression. When the lyrics turn violent a series of brilliant discords emanates from the Piano adding to the contrastbetween the voices the lyrics and the music. An expertly-composed work Nico Muhly's The Two Brothers is a harrowing tale that never compromises on beauty. Three Études for Piano by Nico Muhly. “In preparation for writing a large (uncompleted) work for piano I decided to write three short pieces to get certain musical tics out of my system. Each of these three études addresses a specific rhythmic and harmonic gesture: the first Ostinati focuses on a gently lilting left hand contrasted with angular outbursts in the right hand usually in octaves. The second étude “Quiet Music ” concerns itself with drones and chant-like music and the third “Running ” explores slowly shifting harmonies pitted against very fast cross-hand playing.” –Nico Muhly 2003 These three études were written from January to March 2003 and were composed partially for performance in the VisionIntoArt/RockHotelPianoFest in New York City. Étude #3 (“Running”) was premiered by Eric Huebner and is dedicated to him.

Composers Note: It Remains to be Seen was written for the Boston University Tanglewood Institute’s 40th Anniversary Gala in July 2006. The piece begins with a chord identical to the one at the end of Stravinsky’s Firebird suite and proceeds into a series of charged nocturnal episodes. I wanted to treat the feeling of having just heard music and being expected to make one’s own – referencing the experience of leaving a BSO concert at the shed walking back to BUTI on a curvy back road arguing about music in pairs and threes and at the sign of bright headlights from behind reorganizing in single file as a car filled with happy concert-goers speeds by. The piece is a nine-minute navigation of an excited occasionally illuminated dark road filled with arguing cars fragments of remembered music and a constant propulsive pulse. Nico Muhly
